We know we should be doing it, but we don't always know the best ways to ensure our website benefits from it -- especially when so much has changed in the last year alone. Search engine optimization basically means optimizing your website for search engines. This will make it more likely that qualified visitors will find you in search results. It's worth it. How often do you abandon the first page when you search for something? You will find what you are looking for in the first few listings. How can you make sure your audience clicked in 2020? Keyword-focused SEO vs. Technical SEO When we think about SEO, keywords are often what we associate with it. While that's a huge part of it, the evolution of optimizing for search engines has come far from stuffing our website with relevant words and phrases. Google and other search engines place a lot of emphasis on quality content over quantity in the past few years to give users the best possible results. Google now considers security and how content is presented/formatted a major factor in determining which pages rank higher. Although it can be argued that technical SEO has always been important, with the recent algorithm changes, it's now more vital than ever to pay close attention to the technical health of our websites. Technical SEO is the optimization of your website that does not involve the content. If done properly, technical SEO can give your content the boost that it needs to be found. You risk falling behind if you don't keep up with these developments, as you can see. It is important to have a detailed strategy that prioritizes items that you can put into action as soon as possible. Create a technical SEO strategy Before you can develop an actionable strategy, it is important to identify the areas you should be focusing on. It is mandatory to conduct a technical SEO audit. Franco Valentino, Founder of Narrative SEO, elaborates on why this is so important: Your website is your digital front door to customers. If the website isn't user-friendly and fast, it can attract or repel customers. Technical SEO reports shed light on the connections between your server and other sites. It is possible to identify digital sludge and remove it from your server, which can greatly improve keyword density and conversion rates. After correcting the problems identified by these reports, we have seen a traffic increase of 87% and lead growth of +160%. " You can use tools like SEMRush and Screaming Frog to analyze your current performance and identify areas that need improvement. This type of audit is designed to help you organize your to-do list in the order that will have the greatest impact in the shortest amount of time. Refer to the Pareto Principle to help you prioritize (80% of the output from a given situation is determined by 20% of the input), as well as the three main pillars of SEO: security, site speed, and crawlability. Include these seven technical SEO elements Once you have compiled your list, assign the most responsible team members to each action and set a time frame for completion. You may find a number of problems with your website depending on its technical health. These seven issues are the most common, and you can start working on them right away.

  1. 1.

SSL is a term that we often hear but don't know what it actually means. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer and is essentially a security protocol that encrypts the communication between a web server and a browser online. It was used mainly when we purchased something online (to protect our credit card or payment credentials) or when we signed up for something using our personal data. It's an important part of any website's maintenance, regardless of its purpose. Google Chrome and other browsers launched their "Not Secure" movement in July. This means that any website that does not have a security certificate is "Not Secure." What did you get? The result? It is easy to solve the problem: install a security certificate for your website domain and then migrate your website from HTTPS. If your website is hosted on HubSpot, it's as simple as visiting Settings, Domains, and URLs, clicking on the Edit dropdown for the domain you're trying to change, and checking the box that says "Require HTTPS." You're now ready to go. If your website is hosted on WordPress, here's a handy guide that can help walk you through the process. After you enable SSL, the changes will take effect in about 10-15 minutes. However, it may take up to 72 hours for all the changes to fully take effect, depending on how large your website is.

  1. Reduce site load time (desktop, mobile)

Did you ever visit a website that took too much time to load? Have you ever quit a website that took too long to load? You are not the only one. Over 40% of users have abandoned a site because of the slow time it took to propagate, and that number is only growing with time. Site load time is critical to your success.

  1. Users are much more likely to abandon your site if it doesn't load in under three seconds on mobile and under two seconds on desktop.
  2. Google takes load speed into account as part of its ranking factor.
  3. Users who leave your site are clicking the back button, and this counts as an increase in your bounce rate. Google also uses that as a ranking factor.

There are many ways to increase your site's speed. Large images and large files are the most common causes of slow speeds. Optimizing and compressing these images can dramatically improve the site's load speed. Browser caching, using CDNs, removing scripts and files that are not needed, and decreasing HTTP requests all contribute to this problem. IMPACT Creative Lead, Christine, goes into more detail in her article here. Usually, your site will speed up almost immediately after you have completed the punch list. To effectively test it, try going to a website like www.webpagetest.org, and submit your site before (to see exactly what you need to improve) and then after (to see the results of what you fixed).

  1. Eliminate broken links and 404s

If your website displays 404 errors, this means you are linking to pages that don't exist. They are broken and don't provide the best user experience. This could have happened when a page was originally located at a particular URL. Later, you may have changed the URL or decided that the page wasn't necessary anymore, so you removed it from the web. Once this happens, you want to make sure you set up a 301 redirect. This allows visitors to go to the new page by clicking on the link. Google won't be able to crawl a page if it is broken. This can adversely affect your search ranking. You'll also lose authority if this page is linked from another page or external sources link to it. There are a few things you can do to determine which pages of your website are broken.

  • Use LinkMinerLinkMiner is a Google Chrome Extension I swear by. It checks each page to confirm which links are active and which pages are down. It does not allow you to audit an entire website at once. This makes it useful for smaller web projects or new page quality assurance tasks.
  • Use SEMRush. You can run a SEMRush site audit and get a report on all pages and their statuses within minutes. The next step is to organize all 404 pages and decide where each page will redirect.
  • Use Google Search Console. You can search for crawl errors once you have logged into Search Console. You'll find a list of all your 404 errors pages under the "Not Found" tab. To see the pages linked to these 404 pages, click on the "Linked From" tab.

After you have fixed the broken links and pages, it is a good idea to create a new sitemap that you can submit to Google to inform it of these changes.

  1. Eliminate mixed content issues

If you have mixed content issues, it's very likely that you've recently forced SSL onto your website. This means that your content contains non-secure (HTTP) pages. Even though you have secured your website, it doesn't mean that the linked content you had before the switch will be made. This is a simple fix that can be done quickly, although it may take some time if it's done manually. A Site Audit in SEMRush is a great way to find mixed content issues on your site. The Errors report will display mixed content and will list all pages that should be of concern to you. Once you have a list, you can look through each page and find the HTTP links. You can then change them to HTTPS. But who has the time? If your website is hosted on HubSpot, the best way to tackle this at first is by using their Developers Tools' Console to identify exactly which files are being blocked. Once your developer has resolved the issues, you can rerun the site audit to identify any other errors that may be required. To avoid any potential accumulating problems, ensure that you only embed secure content to your website.

  1. Eliminate duplicate content

Duplicate content on a website means that two or more pages contain identical or almost identical content. Google will not rank the page with duplicate content. You can expect to see a decline in search rankings which will affect your website traffic. SEMRush's Site Audit tool can help you determine if your website has duplicate content. Once you know which pages are duplicates, you can start working to fix them. You can make sure that your pages are unique by following the obvious steps. This can be done by editing your pages or by removing duplicate pages entirely (don't forget to redirect them!). You can find out more at You can add a rel= "canonical" link to one of your pages if it contains duplicate content. This will let search engines know which page you want to appear in search results.

  1. 6.

Your website could gain backlinks over time. Although we assume that backlinks are a good thing, especially if they are reliable, some could be harmful. They can have a negative impact on your search rankings and should be removed. How can you tell if your website is experiencing this problem? Tools such as Screaming Frog and Google Search Console have records of the domains that are backlinking to your site and also give you the domain score to help you evaluate the links. The rule of thumb is if the site linking to you has a score over 50, you probably want to disavow or get rid of it. To disavow any links, the first step is to contact the domains directly and ask them to remove links from your site. This request is often denied or ignored more often than not. It's important that you let Google know that you have requested this favor before you try to remove the links from Search Console. After you have completed this step, export your list and disavow your backlinks to the Google Disavowal Tool. After you are done, Google will give them a "no follow" tag. This will remove any search engine rankings effects. This usually takes around two weeks. (

  1. 7.

After you have completed your technical SEO plan and put SSL on your website, removing any broken content, and finished the rest of your technical SEO planning, you will want to tell Google that you have improved your online presence. Google will eventually be aware of your sitemap, but you can help Google get there much quicker by manually submitting it. As we've eluded to, a sitemap essentially tells Google all about the most important pages on your website. You can access your sitemap if your website is hosted by HubSpot. You can view your sitemap by clicking View XML File. Next, submit it to Google. Log in to Search Console and click Crawl. Next, click Sitemaps. The URL that you originally generated your sitemap can be used to enter the sitemap. Although it only takes a few minutes to submit it, Google may take a while to start indexing it. It's also important to know that it's perfectly normal to only have some of your sitemap indexed versus all of it. You don't want all your pages to be indexed if you think about it. Google may not follow some pages (thank you pages), others may have errors (broken links, duplicate pages), while some pages may be pages that are categories or tags. Submitting your most recent sitemap allows Google to index optimized web pages. This can directly impact your search engine rankings and can also directly affect your business metrics. SEO's unavoidable importance SEO is something every business that has a website must pay close attention to. After all, is it really possible to find you online if you don't exist? It's important to remember that technical SEO, along with keyword-oriented SEO, work well when implemented hand-in-hand.
